Miranda Cameron is the voice actor who creates the magic behind my audio books. I’ve worked with a few voice actors over the years, but found my sister-in-arms when I met Miranda. She is by far, the most professional, capable and delightful voice actor I’ve ever met, and I’m thrilled to have her on my team.

For your delight, I’ve asked Miranda to let me interview her. Here’s what we discussed. I hope you enjoy learning about her and her career as a voice actress. I’d love for you to meet her. She has been gracious enough to take time from her pace-deafening schedule to allow me to interview her, so I can introduce her to you, our fans.

LYNDA:  Hi, Miranda. Thanks for spending this time with me. I adore working with you. You’re by far my favorite audio production artist. Your voice is lovely, easy to listen to and understand, and your attention to detail is impressive. I adore working with you. Thanks for allowing me to introduce you to our fans. I’m sure they’re going to enjoy learning about you.

MIRANDA:  Hi Lynda! Thank you for giving me the opportunity!

LYNDA:  Where are you located?

MIRANDA: I am originally from the lovely little town of Waco, Texas, but grew up in the agricultural town of Fresno, CA. I visited my grandparents in Waco and lived in Austin when I was a little older so I do have a special love for Texas, though I’m currently residing in Fresno.

LYNDA:  Tell us a little about yourself (e.g.: education, family life, etc.).

MIRANDA: I grew up with two older brothers, a little sister and two wonderful parents in Fresno, CA then went to college at Cal State Monterey Bay, majoring in Film. Then I attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and South Coast Repertory where I studied both Acting and Vocal Techniques. Next I worked in Los Angeles in Film for a little while and acted in a few short films.

I became a Tour Guide at Universal Studios, where I met my husband, who had just moved there from West Virginia. We hit it off and moved to Austin, TX, got married and made a film called “Under the Western Sun” for our honeymoon. I was one of the actors starring in the film shot in Smithville, Texas.

We moved back to Fresno and have three sons. While being a mom, I have managed to keep my voice-over acting career going, working in commercials, promotional videos, corporate training videos and of course, audio books!

LYNDA:  What inspired you to become a voice actor? (or whatever title you prefer to use)

MIRANDA: The cartoon movies and TV shows I grew up with. There are a lot of talented voice actors who I am inspired by, like Tress Macnielle, Steve Bloom, Susan Egan and Frank Welker.

LYNDA:  How did you get into voice acting?

MIRANDA: I actually started doing voice-overs for commercials my husband was editing and found I really enjoyed it. My background experience in acting, singing and audio editing helped me create a demo and start doing commercials. I built up my career from there.

LYNDA:  You and I enjoy working together. Can you tell our audience more about that?

MIRANDA: I love working with Lynda! We’ve actually worked together for the past year and in that time have created 8 of Lynda’s audiobooks for Audible. Lynda is always helpful and accommodating. She’s also a fantastic writer and one of the things I like most about her books, is being able to revisit some of the Sweetwater’s reoccurring characters, like Sage and Wyatt, while introducing new characters who always have an interesting mystery to solve.

LYNDA:  What genres do you find particularly interesting to work on?

MIRANDA: Romance is always fun but I also enjoy Science Fiction, Paranormal and Historical Fiction.

LYNDA:  What genres do you find challenging?

MIRANDA: Sometimes Non-Fiction can be challenging because I’m reading in one voice for the entirety. You have to keep it interesting so the listener doesn’t get bored. Sometimes it takes as much energy to do non-fiction as it does doing different characters in fiction audio books!

LYNDA:  Tell us a little about your work process and how you manage it?

MIRANDA: I have a home studio where I do the entire recording first. Recording the entire book helps me keep the feel of characters when I perform them. I work on that for a few hours every weekday. Then I edit, removing mistakes and extra breaths before mastering the audio.

Mastering is a fancy way of saying I make sure volume levels match and are within the range Audible requires.

When I have a finished product, I send it to the author. The author reviews it and lets me know what changes need to be made. I then re-record those parts or adjust things before the audio book is finally complete.

It’s nice having a home studio. My kids and husband can visit, if they need something while I’m working.

LYNDA:  Has COVID changed anything about your work life?

MIRANDA: Surprisingly it hasn’t changed too much, since I have been working from home all along. I’ve gotten more business, since audiobooks and commercials depend on voiceover more often at the moment.

LYNDA:  What would you like to tell our readers about your business as a voice actor?

MIRANDA: Being a voice actor is fun but also challenging. You have to take good care of your voice by hydrating, limiting caffeine and dairy and getting good sleep. I’m always creating and practicing new characters, keeping up with singing and vocal warm-ups in preparation for every chapter or commercial I create. I edit my audio, so I’m always brushing up on my technical audio skills. Spending hours in the recording booth can get lonely. My three rambunctious boys keep me busy! So sometimes work is like a taking little break.

LYNDA:  Do you do voice acting or other types of audio production?

MIRANDA: Yes! I do a lot of commercials and promotional videos. I’m developing a character reel and venturing into video games and animation.

LYNDA:  What about the work drives you?

MIRANDA: The heart of the work is storytelling. I love telling stories and having the opportunity to breathe life into them.

LYNDA:  If you could do it over again, would you change anything about your business?

MIRANDA: I would have gone into the business much sooner!

LYNDA:  What have you learned along the way, building your audiobook production business, you’d like to share with fans or aspiring voice actors?

MIRANDA: Acting skills are helpful in this field and it is important to keep my vocal skills sharp.

LYNDA:  Which one of our (yours and mine) co-produced audiobooks would you like to see made into a motion picture? Who would you like to play the lead?

MIRANDA: Oh that’s a tough one. They could all be fun movies. I would probably pick Blood and Studs. I enjoyed the relationship of the two main characters-Levi Madison and Riley Powers. I could see Karen Gillian playing Riley and Taylor Kitsch playing Levi.

LYNDA:  Any advice you’d like to share?

MIRANDA: Always make an effort to keep learning and become better at what you do. Be flexible and kind.

LYNDA:  What makes you laugh/cry?

MIRANDA: When I talk about my Dad with my family. He passed away recently. He was a wonderful person, always funny and kind. So I laugh and cry simultaneously.

LYNDA:  I’m sorry for your loss. I too lost my dad. It’s tough, and you never stop missing him. Is there one person, past or present, you would love to meet? Why?

MIRANDA: Definitely Paul McCartney. He seems like he would have a lot of great stories to tell, and we could play music together. I’m sure he could teach me a few things!

LYNDA:  What hobbies do you enjoy?

MIRANDA: I play the guitar and piano and love playing music. I’m also writing stories in my spare time. 

LYNDA:  Wow! Impressive, I’m surprised you have spare time with a full-time business and three youngsters in the house. What TV shows/films do you enjoy?

MIRANDA: I love Back to the Future, It’s a Wonderful Life and Pride and Prejudice (The one directed by Joe Wright.). The IT Crowd is one of my favorite TV shows—very funny.

LYNDA:  What is your favorite food, color and  music?

MIRANDA: I love blueberry muffins with coffee! My favorite color is green! And I love so many different types of music, I couldn’t pick one. I grew up listening to The Beatles, The Rolling Stones; and I love Bjork and Radiohead.

LYNDA:  If you didn’t do voice acting, what would you do?

MIRANDA: I would probably be a singer/songwriter.

LYNDA:  Imagine you only have 24 hours to live. How would you spend that time?

MIRANDA: Definitely with my family, spending time outside in nature.

LYNDA:  What would you want written on your head stone?

MIRANDA: Hahaha! This is a fun question. Maybe these song lyrics from Ruby Tuesday: “There’s no time to lose,” I heard her say. Catch your dreams before they slip away.”
