Grandma is an Alien

Youngsters, Ethan and Bea, plan to save Grandma, convinced an alien has possessed her body. She’s sad, always hurts, has dark circles under her eyes, can’t play with them any longer, looks and acts differently.

Six-year-old Ethan and ten-year-old Bea are confused. Grandma looks sad, hurts all the time, has dark circles under her eyes, can’t toss a ball or frisbee, and doesn’t take care of herself as she did in the past. Ethan mistakes a shooting star for a UFO and convinces Bea Grandma has been possessed by an alien. Adults call it arthritis. Is that to prevent people from being scared because it’s catching?

They hatch a plan to prevent the alien from taking over Mom, too.

That is one of the most genuinely useful things a children’s book can do: take a confusing, frightening experience in a child’s real life and give them a way to talk about it that feels safe, manageable, and even a little bit funny. Children who watch a grandparent change because of arthritis, or any chronic illness, do not have the language or the framework to understand what they are seeing. I really like how the story explores a serious topic such as arthritis through the eyes of children. Ethan and Bea’s belief that their grandmother has been taken over by an alien is both imaginative and touching. What stood out to me most is how the story seems to combine humour, family relationships, and an important message in a way that younger readers can understand. -Miro Calen
