Native Americans tanned hides by peeing on hem to soften the skin. Early American settlers did the same. So they urinated into a covered pot to use it for this purpose and sometimes sold the urine to tanneries. Those earning money this way were called “piss poor.”
Those too poor to afford a covered pot “didn’t have a pot to piss in.”
